Barcelona is famous for its fabulous bars and restaurants. If you wants some fresh seafood, the area of Barceloneta with its small streets near Barcelona 's beaches, is the place to go. The Barri Gotic (Gothic Area) in the center of the city offers a wide range of good restaurants of every kind, and to sample traditional Spanish cuisine away from tourist places, try the restaurants in the Eixample district.

Pork is the most popular meat in Barcelona with traditional recipes including Jamón, longanissa and chorizo. Other recommended local specialties include tortilla de patatas, caldereta de langosta, lacon con grelos, bacalao al pil-pil, paella, gazpacho manchego, pescaito frito and dorada a la sal.

Lunch starts around 2pm and goes on until roughly 4pm; dinner is served from about 9pm until 11:30pm or midnight. Some restaurants open earlier in the evening, but arriving before 9:30 or 10:00pm generally means you will be dining alone or in company of foreign tourists. Reserving a table is generally a good idea.

Eating out in Barcelona is not as cheap as it used to be, but low mark-ups on vines keep the cost relatively reasonable for north Europeans and Americans. All but the upmarket restaurants are required by law to serve an economical fixed-price menú del dia at lunchtime; this usually consists of a starter, main course, dessert, bread and something to drink. The idea is to provide cheaper meals for the workers, but while it can be a real bargin, it is not by any means a taster menu or a showcase for the chef's greatest hits.

Laws governing the issue of prices are routinely flouted, but legally menus must declare if the seven per cent IVA (VAT) is included in prices or not (it rarely is), and also if there is a cover charge. Tipping is not a widespread practice in Barcelona but of course, should you wish to leave a tip, it is always appreciated, but usually never leave more than 4 euros, even in upscale restaurants.
