Madrid Barajas International Airport (MAD) is Spain's largest and busiest airport, the worlds tenth busiest and Europe's fourth. In 2007, more than 52.1 million passengers used Barajas. The airport has four terminals, the new terminal 4 opened in February 2006. It consists of a new terminal building, a satellite building and two new runways. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 operate Air Europe and Spanair, as well as all members of Skyteam and Star Alliance, including Air France, Lufthansa, Thai Airways and Delta Air, among others. Terminal 4 houses all Iberia flights and all Oneworld alliance members, including British Airways, American Airlines and LAN Airlines among others. Barajas serves as the gateway to the Iberian peninsula from the rest of Europe and the world, and is a particular key link between Europe and Latin America.
Madrid Barajas International Airport is located 13 kilometers (8 miles) north-east of central Madrid. A free shuttle bus transfers passengers between the terminals and the long-stay car park. There is also a free shuttle bus which connects the new terminal 4 wit the other terminals (journey time - 10 minutes). Barajas has metro stations in terminal 2 and terminal 4 that takes you straight to the newly reformed Nuevos Metro station in the center of Madrid, with a jurney time of just 12 minutes. Trains leave every 5 minutes from 6:00am to 02:00pm.
Taxis are available from all terminals, with a journey time to the center of Madrid in under 30 minutes, depending on trafic. Walk outside the airport terminal to the taxi ranks, and do not accept offers from drivers inside the terminal, since these are often illigal drivers and you will almost certainly get ripped off. Busses also provide effective services.
All major car rental companies are available in Barajas airport, and all have offices between arrival halls 1 and 2 in terminal 1. In most cases it is often cheaper to reserve your car rental before you arrive.
