Majorca or Mallorca, whatever you prefer, lies in the Mediterranean Sea, off the south east coast of mainland Spain. Majorca covers an area of 3640 sq. km, with a coastline of more than 550 kilometers, this makes it the largest of the Balearic Islands, in fact it is the largest Spanish island. The Balearic Islands also includes Menorca, Ibiza and the small and unspoiled Formentera.

Majorca is best known for its stunning beaches and nature. Beaches is what most people come for. The main tourist areas are on the southern and eastern costs, but places may be overcrowded in high season. When you leave the coastline and take a look at the inner country you will find another Majorca, it is beautiful, not overcrowded and much cheaper.

In the late fifties and early sixties Majorca became a destination for cheap mass tourism, and developed into a destination many would not want to go to any longer. But in more recent times Mallorca has reinvented itself with emphasis on more upmarket tourism, with visitors encouraged to explore the island's beautiful coastline and interior. An example of this is Puerto Andratx and the town Andratx situated in the west corner of Majorca. With magnificent mountains either side of the port Andratx, this place has become one of the most sought after areas for celebrities and others, either to live or go on holidays.

Palma de Mallorca is the capital for the Balearic Islands and also the biggest city in terms of both population and extension. Right now almost 400,000 people live there, and its is still growing. The city has something to offer for almost everyone; good shopping, historical places and museums, nice restaurants and a lively nightlife - there is no way to be bored in Palma de Mallorca, if you do not want to. Outside Palma de Mallorca you find the airport that connects to most places in Europe.

Majorca enjoys a Mediterannean island climate with moderate pleasant summer temperatures, mild autumns and cool winters with temperatures rarely below zero. Sometimes the weather can be unstable with rain and rather strong winds, but it seldom lasts for long.
